The Nemaha County jail facility (built in 1978) was no longer sufficient for current needs. There was a lack of necessary space, concerning security and safety issues, antiquated plumbing, and an out-dated design. Nemaha County decided to proceed with building a new facility attached to the County Courthouse, to the west side of the existing jail facility.
This project included a new addition with 15 cells separated into five pods. The pod style allows for increased security by separating inmates according to severity level. The jail addition included a control room, booking area, large work release cell, small cells for special purposes (like a padded cell and a holding cell), a medical exam area, multiple visitation rooms, a separate kitchen, a laundry room, a staff break room, and an office for the county attorney.
